Just some of the awesomeness you’ll find in our class Flickr photo pool!

Okay, so maybe online social networking didn’t exist in 1993, but it does now, and it is time to get on board!

Your class officers have gone all Web 2.0 on you, and set up a Flickr photo pool.

What’s that, you ask? A place on the photo sharing site Flickr where you can view photos of your classmates from good old Wheaton, plus add ones of your own. Some from the days long gone, photos from past reunions and most importantly, photos from your 15th reunion.

That’s right, if you, like the rest of the world, have a digital camera or camera phone, and will be using it at reunion THIS COMING WEEKEND, why not join our Flickr pool and post your images from the weekend for those that were there and those that wish they had been?

Here’s what you do.

1. Join Flickr, if you aren’t already a member. (It’s free.)

2. Once you are a member, you’re eligible to join our Flickr pool.

We don’t have primaries and debates, there is no campaign budget and the closest thing we have to a national convention is our reunion on May 16-18, but the thing is, we’ll be doing our voting then, so we need to throw a few names out there NOW so we have some names on the ballot for May.

Who should your next class officers be? Who do you trust to keep you updated about your class in the Quarterly each season? To motivate us to make our annual gift to the college? And to plan a rockin’ 20th reunion in five years?

I’ll get us started.

I think Sarah Nagle Null would make a great class secretary—she will make you laugh while keeping you up-to-date in the Quarterly for the next five years, I guarantee it. (And just because she has twins and is about to start nursing school? Don’t let her hide behind THAT tired old excuse.) I also think Rebecca Fisher would make an awesome class secretary–maybe they could split the job.

And what about getting some MALE representation on our slate of officers? We were the second co-ed class, you remember. Chris Harris? Garrick Gelinas? Ron Corning? Kyle Waters?  Dylan Jones? Bob Pellecchia? Doug Lepuc? Brian O’Toole? Spencer Zawasky? We know you’re out there.

And what about putting our husband and wife teams to work? Jamie and Stacey MacFarlane? Or Erin & Michael Weisberg who reconnected at a reunion, wouldn’t THEY be great as class officers? I’m just saying.

Everyone has a few (at least) boxes of things that get moved over and over and yet never unpacked, right? I have one box that made the move with me from Norton to Cambridge to Alexandria (Virginia) to Oxford (Mississippi) and never got opened.

Recently, I was scared silly when Oprah did a show on hoarders. You know, people who have so many boxes (eBay purchases, paper towels, junk mail, whatever) in their house that they literally have pathways through them?

Anyhow, so Oprah scared me and I started going through things that hadn’t seen the light of day since the Clinton administration and what do you think I found? A plastic pitcher. From the Elegant Pub in Norton, Massachusetts.

It doesn’t say “The Elegant” on it. I just remember that it’s from the Elegant. I remember the night that I, er, acquired it, too. Senior year. They announced last call at the Elegant. It was snowing and we ordered one more pitcher of beer, then ran outside with it and hid it in the bushes (“to stay cold”), and went back inside to finish and settle the tab. Then, the four of us made our way back to campus with our “to go” pitcher of beer from the Elegant.

Apparently, this became a habit—not just among my friends at Wheaton, but Wheaton students in general—because sometime later that school year, a friend ordered a new pitcher of beer at the Elegant and the bartender grumpily said, “I don’t have any more pitchers because you guys keep stealing them.” (in retrospect, maybe this is why we started going to Wendell’s more.)

Now the only question is: what should be done with this plastic pitcher from the Elegant that formerly held beer on a snowy night in Norton? Last I heard, the Elegant was no more, so we can’t return it to them.

I’m pretty sure the Wheaton Archives won’t want it.

No matter what, I guess this much is clear: the pitcher is coming to reunion with me next May and y’all can help me figure out where it should go.

It’s even harder to believe that I now have a teenage son.

Brandon just turned 13 a couple of weeks ago and he’s already started talking about college.

I am trying my best to steer him towards Wheaton but right now he wants to go to Bowdoin because it’s just around the corner and he thinks he’s going to live at home!

I am hoping to bring him to Wheaton for the reunion.

When I asked Brandon if he wanted to come to reunion with me he asked, “Why do I want to go?” It got me thinking about all the great and challenging times I had during my 4 years at Wheaton. I especially thought of my senior year and living in Emerson. It was my first experience living in an all women’s dorm and I had a blast! I particularly remember the hot days in May when we would open the bathroom window and climb out onto the roof to catch some sun while studying for upcoming finals.

Another great memory was sneaking out onto the library roof during finals week and standing behind the flood lights and tossing these small rocks down at people we knew and having them look up to the roof but they couldn’t see us because we stood behind the light. We laughed so hard we gave ourselves away more than once. That was a total stress reliever and incredibly funny.

I am currently living in Brunswick, ME, and have been for the past 11 years. I have been married to my husband, Kevin, for 13 years. I work for a small disability company called Custom Disability Solutions, a division of Reliance Standard Life out of Philadelphia and Kevin works for Unum. I am actually using skills I honed at Wheaton as I work on our bilingual block of business and use Spanish on a daily basis. I spend a lot of my time driving my son back and forth from soccer/basketball/track practice (depending on the time of year), currently basketball. I also coach soccer in the fall for jr. high boys and am on the board for the Brunswick Youth Soccer League.

I try to be active in our community and you can occasionally catch me performing at the Chocolate Church Performing Arts Center in Bath, ME. I can’t wait to see everybody at our 15th reunion, it should be a lot of fun. Hope to see you there!

Fifteen years ago this week, you were probably at home doing your last loads of laundry before returning to campus for our senior spring.

Today?

You’re a little more than 93 days out from your fifteenth college reunion, and while some of you may still be doing laundry at your parents’ house, for the most part times have changed. A lot. When we left campus in 1993, we were given a booklet with our classmate’s names and mailing addresses, and now I’ve got a new 93-er sending a friends request every time I log into Facebook.

So since we’ve got got a great party planned for your fifteenth reunion at Wheaton, May 16-18, 2008, since we’ve got all this great technology at our fingertips and since you might need a littler refresher on who, exactly, was in your class, we’ve launched this reunion blog. Your class officers, a group of people you may not even remember attending college with, are kicking it off, but we’re looking to YOU to write the rest.

We want blog posts of a few paragraphs (300-400 words) from members of the class of 1993. This is NO BIG DEAL, folks, you wrote ten-page papers in your Revolutions freshman seminar in 1989. It takes 300 words just to order a latte.

So sit down at your computer, and send an email to wheatonclassof1993@gmail.com.

Write about your most memorable days at Wheaton, your least favorite meal in the dining hall, your freshman year roommate, what you would do differently, what you wouldn’t change at all and your most embarrassing college moment.

Write about Vera from the dining hall, Head of the Peacock, Midnight Brunch in the dining hall, dimple diving, trips to the Coffee Pot and how much your clothes smelled of smoke when you got back, the late night Chinese food that took two hours to be delivered (did that happen to everyone or just me?) your coach, your professors and your friends.

Write about what your Wheaton experience means to you now that we are out or just tell a funny story. Write about something memorable, emotional, personal, but write about something very definitely Wheaton.

And hey, we’re going to need a photo to go with it, whether it is dated 1993 or 2008. Because I’m going to need a way to recognize you on Facebook.

Thinking back to my Wheaton days, many memories come to mind…but two in particular: I vividly remember presenting my Anthropology thesis senior year while contending with a nasty flu! I remember standing at the podium in Mary Lyon and seeing the faces of my audience go blurry and then watching as the “men in blue” (Public Safety) showed up, after someone called them with concern of my well-being!

And one dining hall memory sticks out in my mind: throwing away my ID with the food from my meal and having to spend a long time digging thru the garbage bins until I found it! (And I know I was not the only one who experienced this ritual!) How nasty and something I hope current students don’t have to contend with!  

I’m really looking forward to our upcoming 15th reunion on May 16-18, 2008 and catching-up with everyone. We’d love to hear what you remember about your Wheaton days and what you are up to now—I’ll start!
